Enhancements 

There are inherent limitations in wireless technology, which can cause intermittent wireless communication 

problems.  In an attempt to limit some of these issues, Merit has made several wireless enhancements to the 

software. 

• 

The software performs a wireless communication test after you initially set up your wireless network 

or if you make any changes to your settings.  If the network fails to establish a connection, a warning 

message will now appear informing you to check your settings.  Previously, the software would try to 

connect to the router multiple times even if it made a successful connection, causing the operator to 

have to wait for this process to finish.  Now, if there is a problem with the network, you will be 

immediately informed. 

• 

The software also checks the status of the configured wireless network when the game enters idle 

mode.  If the connection has failed, it will attempt to reconnect to the router during idle.  This feature is 

set up as an operator-selectable option (found in Network > Options) that can be turned off if you don’t 

want it to automatically try to reconnect for any reason (e.g. if you know the network will be down).  It is 

also available through the 6-Star Menu, if desired, so that the operator can choose to allow the location 

to turn this option on and off. 

• 

The Wireless Device Details Screen also provides additional information about your wireless 

network.  It now shows both the network settings as entered by the operator (listed under “Setting”) as 

well as how the network is currently functioning (listed under “Current”).  This will help operators to see 

all settings at once and determine if the network is functioning as expected. 

These enhancements are incorporated into the Ion 2008 software release and are also available as a free 

update for Ion 2007.5 software.  The Ion 2007.5 update (version 23.50) is available for download from our 

Web site (

) and is also available as a free update disc to any 

operator wishing to install it on an Ion 2007.5 game.  This installation is not required, but it will offer the 

operator some improvements if they are experiencing wireless connection issues.  If you want to install the 

update by disc, contact your distributor to receive your free Ion 2007.5 update disc (part number: SB0537-01).  

Follow the instructions on the reverse side of this sheet to install the disc.

Software Installation Instructions 

In order to successfully update your game, you MUST be currently running Ion 2007.5 software, version 23.XX, 
To determine the software version running on your game, push the set-up button inside the cabinet.  The PG 
number will be displayed in the corner of the first screen that appears.  Ion 2007 software will have the number, 
PG3002V23.XX.  Follow the instructions below to install the enclosed software. 

Connecting a DVD Drive 

1.  Turn off power to the game. 
2.  Unlock and open the CPU section. 
3.  Connect the 2 x 20-pin IDE connector to the IDE interface connector on the DVD drive.  Make sure the red 

stripe on the ribbon cable matches up with pin 1 on the IDE interface connector. 

4.  Connect the four (4) pin power connector on the ribbon cable to the DC power input on the DVD drive. 
5.  Locate the centronics connector. 

For Aurora games

: Unlock the rear door and open it if it is hinged, or remove it if is detachable. 

For eVo and eVo Wallette games

: The centronics connector is located at the back of the game.  The 

cover plate is secured to the game with either a hex screw (removable with a 5/64" Allen wrench) or a 
standoff threaded through the CPU section. 

For Elite Edge games

: For coin-only games, remove the cotter pin and unhinge the CPU section to 

access the connector on the back of the CPU section.  For bill-only games, the connector is inside the 
CPU section. 

 

For Fusion games

: The centronics connector is located on the outside of the electronics box. 

6.  Make sure your DVD drive is configured as the Master Drive. 
7.  Connect the centronics connector on the ribbon cable to the centronics connector on the game. 

 NOTE

When positioning your DVD drive, it is important that you find a suitable place where the drive  will not 

 

be in danger of coming in contact with any components or wires inside of the game. 

Software Installation Instructions 

8.  Turn on the game. 
9.  Insert the disc into the DVD drive.  If you don’t get the disc into the drive before the game starts to boot-up, 

turn off the game and turn it back on. 

10.  When the DVD is finished installing, the screen will display a message indicating that the update is complete.

 

11.  Remove the disc and turn off power to the game. 

12.  Carefully disconnect the ribbon cable from the centronics connector on the game. 

NOTE

When disconnecting the ribbon cable, carefully disconnect the cable by grasping the connector and 

not the cable itself

13.  Close and lock the CPU section door of the game. 

14.  Restore power to the game.
