Bill Acceptor Upgrade for the New Five-Dollar Bill
Merit’s bill acceptor supplier, MEI, has developed recognition software for the new five-dollar bill that
recently entered circulation. There are two options to upgrade the bill acceptor in your Megatouch game.
MEI offers a handheld programming device and an adapter cable (9-pin AC power cable, MEI part
number 01-12-139), which can be used to perform the update. You can also take the bill acceptor to an
authorized MEI service center to have it reprogrammed. A list of authorized service centers is available
on MEI’s Web site at www.meiglobal.com.
Merit began using the newly programmed acceptors in manufactured games on January 16
th
. Therefore,
all games with the serial number 011608XXXXXXXX or greater (the first 6 digits indicate the date of
manufacture) already have the new bill acceptor installed and require no additional programming.
For games that require reprogramming, follow the instructions below if you are programming the bill
acceptor yourself.
1. Turn off the game and disconnect it from its power source.
2. Disconnect the 2 connectors running to the side of the bill acceptor, taking note of how they are
connected so you can reconnect them later.
IMPORTANT: Make sure to take note of your bill acceptor connectors before removing
them. If the connectors aren’t properly connected and aligned when replacing them, you
can render your bill acceptor inoperable.
3. Connect the 30-pin connector on the harness attached to the handheld programming device to
the same location on the bill acceptor where you just removed the previous 2 connectors.
4. Connect the 9-pin connector from the separate AC power cable to the mating 9-pin connector on
the harness attached to the programming device. Plug the other end of this cable into an outlet.
5. Locate the switches on the opposite side of the bill acceptor and turn on switch 8 (all other
switches should be off).
6. Plug in and turn on the game. The software will download to the bill acceptor.
7. Once the software is downloaded, the bill acceptor will perform a run and stack. Wait for the run
and stack before disconnecting the device.
8. Turn off power to the game and disconnect the 30-pin connector from the bill acceptor.
9. Return switch 8 to the off position.
10. Reconnect the 2 bill acceptor connectors as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
IMPORTANT: Make sure to take note of your bill acceptor connectors before replacing
them. If the connectors aren’t properly connected and aligned when replacing them, you
can render your bill acceptor inoperable.
11. Close and lock the game.
12. Turn on the game.
13. Test the functionality of the bill acceptor to make sure that it is properly registering and giving the
appropriate number of credits for the new five-dollar bill.
